About this piece

This nine-branch Hanukkah menorah carries the walls of Jerusalem in painted enamel, with a blue Star of David and every candle in a row. On the first night, with one candle and the shamash lit, the old city glows in your window.

What it means

A Hanukkah menorah, or hanukkiah (חנוכייה), has nine branches: eight for the nights of Hanukkah and the shamash, the helper candle used to light the others. Each night you add one more light. The walls of Jerusalem recall the city where the Temple was rededicated in the Hanukkah story.

Size and materials

  • Branches: 9 (8 + shamash)
  • Material: zinc alloy, enamel paint
  • Size: 7.3 × 4.7 in, 1.9 in deep (18.5 × 12 × 4.7 cm)
  • Candles: standard Hanukkah candles, about 10 mm (3/8 in) wide

It is about the size of a paperback book and shallow enough for a narrow windowsill.

Who it is for

A first menorah for a new home, a couple's first Hanukkah together, or a grown child setting up their own apartment. It is also a generous host gift if you are invited for the first night. Hanukkah 2026 starts at sundown on Friday, December 4: order by November 18 to have it in time.

The verse that goes with it: “For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching is light.” (Proverbs 6:23)

Care: Let the candles burn out. Once the wax is cool, lift it off by hand without scraping the enamel. Never leave it burning unattended.

The story behind it

Jerusalem in the window on the first night.

The kitchen is loud, someone is frying latkes, and the kids are arguing over who gets to hold the shamash. Then the room goes quiet for the blessings.

One candle on the first night, two on the second, until all eight burn together on the last. Behind them sit the walls of Jerusalem, painted in enamel, with a blue Star of David. For eight nights, the old city stands on your windowsill, and everyone who walks past can see it.

Lit together

Lit together, night after night.

A menorah is the piece the family gathers around. Years later, the children still remember who held the shamash and whose turn it was.

If you can, place it in a window, so the light is seen from the street, as the tradition asks.

Eight nights. One more light each night.

Made for giving.

Before you order

How do I light it?
Place the candles from right to left and light them from left to right, newest first, after sundown. Our guide has the blessings.
Where should it go?
Traditionally in a window or by the door, where the light can be seen from outside. Keep it away from curtains and never leave it burning unattended.
The first night of Hanukkah 2026 is a Friday. What changes?
On Friday, light the menorah before sundown and before the Shabbat candles. Use candles that will burn until at least half an hour after dark, about 10 mm (3/8 in) wide so they fit.
How many candles do I need for all eight nights?
44: 36 for the eight nights plus one shamash each night. Most boxes of Hanukkah candles hold 44.
Is a menorah the same as a hanukkiah?
A hanukkiah is the nine-branch menorah used on Hanukkah. The Temple menorah had seven branches. In the US, most people say menorah for both.
