About this piece

This Shabbat candle holder keeps the lights and the words together. A clear acrylic arch carries the candle blessing in Hebrew under a gold title, and its base has two cups for tealights, so everything you need on Friday night sits in one place.

What it means

The title, הדלקת נרות שבת (hadlakat nerot Shabbat), means “lighting the Shabbat candles.” Most families say the blessing as: Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Shabbat. In English: Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who made us holy with His commandments and commanded us to light the Shabbat light. The Yehi ratzon, “may it be Your will,” is a prayer many women add for their family. The two lights stand for zachor and shamor: remember and keep.

Size and materials

  • Material: acrylic
  • Size: 5.4 × 6.6 in, base 2.3 in deep (13.8 × 16.8 × 5.8 cm)
  • Text: הדלקת נרות שבת, the candle blessing and the Yehi ratzon prayer, in Hebrew
  • Lights: two cups for tealights. Use tealights in their own metal cups, and never leave them burning unattended.

It is about the size of a greeting card standing up, small enough for a kitchen counter or the end of the dinner table.

Who it is for

A bride, or a couple in their first home. A daughter who lights in a small apartment. A mother who has lit tall tapers for decades and wants an easier setup for the busy weeks.

The verse that goes with it: “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” (Exodus 20:8)

Care: Wipe with a soft damp cloth. No alcohol or glass cleaner on acrylic. Let the tealights burn out and cool before you clean it.

The story behind it

For Friday nights in a very small kitchen.

The apartment is small. The table is also the desk, and the counter is also where the mail piles up. For a while, Shabbat candles felt like something for a bigger home.

Then a clear little stand arrives. Two tealights in the base, the blessing in Hebrew right behind them, a gold title at the top. On Friday, when her phone reminds her, she clears one corner and lights. The room is the same size. It feels different.

Before you order

Is it a good gift for a bride?
Yes. Lighting the Shabbat candles is often a bride's first ritual in a new home.
Can I return it?
Yes, within 30 days of delivery, unused and in its original packaging.
Can I use regular candles?
It is made for tealights in their own metal cups. Set it on a steady surface away from curtains, and never leave the lights burning unattended.
Do I say the blessing before or after lighting?
In the Ashkenazi custom you light first, cover your eyes, then say the blessing. Many Sephardi families say the blessing first and then light. Keep your family's custom, or ask your rabbi.
When do you light Shabbat candles?
On Friday, before sunset. The common custom is 18 minutes before sunset, and candles are never lit after it. Check your city's time each week, since it moves with the sun.
Can I ship it as a gift?

Yes. Enter their name and address as the shipping address at checkout. The tracking link comes to you.

Do you ship outside the US?

Not yet. For now we ship to the United States only, free and tracked.
