About this piece

This mini olive wood mezuzah case holds a 10 cm scroll and is sized for a bedroom, a child's room or an office doorframe. The olive wood grain is a little different in every piece, so no two doorways look the same.

What it means

A mezuzah (מזוזה) case holds the klaf, a small parchment with the first two paragraphs of the Shema, handwritten by a trained scribe. Deuteronomy 6:9 asks for these words on the doorposts of your house. The letter shin (ש), seen on many cases, stands for Shaddai, a name of God. This is the case only: the kosher scroll is bought separately.

Size and materials

  • Material: olive wood, resin
  • Fits a scroll of: 10 cm (about 4 in)
  • Case: 5.5 × 1 in (14 × 2.5 cm)
  • Mounting: adhesive strip on the back, for smooth surfaces
  • Scroll: not included

It is about the length of a pen and an inch wide, small enough for a narrow inside doorframe.

Who it is for

A gift for a new baby's room, a child's first bedroom, a home office, or a college student's dorm door (check the dorm's rules first). Many families put a mezuzah on the door of every room people live in, so small cases are useful for the inside doors of a new home.

The verse that goes with it: “The LORD shall guard thy going out and thy coming in.” (Psalm 121:8)

Care: Dust with a dry cloth. No sprays or cleaners on the wood.

The story behind it

For the door of the room where the baby sleeps.

The crib is built, the tiny clothes are folded, the night light is plugged in. One small thing is still missing from the door.

This mini case is made for an inside doorway like that one. Add a kosher 10 cm scroll, say the blessing, and the words of the Shema are there every time someone tiptoes in at night. The verse that goes with it fits: the LORD shall guard thy going out and thy coming in.

On the doorpost

The first thing on the new door.

A touch of the fingers, a small kiss, every time you come home. The case protects the scroll that carries the Shema.

Hang it on the right doorpost as you walk in, in the upper third, tilted toward the room.

Every doorway, a blessing.

Made for giving.

Before you order

How do I hang it?
On the right doorpost as you enter, in the upper third. Ashkenazi families usually tilt the top toward the room; Sephardi families hang it straight. Our guide walks you through it and the blessing.
Can I hang it outside?
On a covered doorframe, yes. Keep wood and resin out of standing water.
Is there a blessing when I hang it?
Yes, once the kosher scroll is inside: Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha'olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu likbo'a mezuzah. It thanks God for the commandment to affix a mezuzah.
Is a 10 cm scroll big enough?
Yes. 10 cm is one of the most common scroll sizes. A scroll is kosher because of how it is written, not its size, so buy it from a trusted scribe or Judaica seller.
Which rooms need a mezuzah?
Traditionally every doorway of a room people live in, including bedrooms, but not bathrooms. Ask your rabbi for your own family's practice.
Can I ship it as a gift?

Yes. Enter their name and address as the shipping address at checkout. The tracking link comes to you.

Do you ship outside the US?

Not yet. For now we ship to the United States only, free and tracked.
